If you need it, Word Microscope can give you help in a number of different ways.
This is Skopo, if you're not sure what to do next, or you need ideas for new words and word sums, you can get help from Skopo.
Most parts of the screen have a Next Steps button.
When you press it, Skopo takes account of what you've done so far and which part of the screen you're in, to suggest what you could do next. You can view all suggestions at once or one at a time.
The most powerful way that you can get help from Skopo, is in exploring new words and word sums using an Ideas Probe. The Ideas Probe uses Skopo's knowledge of spelling patterns and tens of thousands of English words to:
Skopo is only aware of structural patterns. Skopo doesn't understand the meaning of a word, so you still need to use your own judgement when using the Ideas Probe.
Here's an example of the Ideas Probe showing suggested ideas for analysing the word <piglet>:
As you create new elements in Word Sums or the Word matrix, Word Microscope arranges the elements in an Element Gallery, on the side of the screen.
The Element Gallery also contains a reference list of prefixes, bases and suffixes.
You can use this to drag and drop elements into the Active Word Sum.
This means that you concentrate on word building rather than unnecessary typing.
We want Word Microscope to be a safe environment for exploration. You can Undo or Redo any action, which means you can experiment knowing that you can go back again if things go wrong.
If you have access to the Web, there are several useful options in the Tools menu.
The Interactive Suffix Checker helps to check the joins in your word sum. For example, it can tell you if the final letter of a stem needs to double or if a final silent <e> needs removing. You don't record joins in the current version of Word Microcscope, but you should make sure that the joins between elements will work.
If you want more flexibillty in searching word families than in the Ideas Probe, then you can use the on-line Word Searcher. This and the Interactive Suffix Checker are freely available even if you are not using Word Microscope.
To help you check the correct spelling, meaning and origin of a word, there are links to an on-line dictionary and an etymology site. A conventional paper dictionary with etymologies is also a good accompaniment when you use Word Microscope.
